Does Gold-Plated Jewellery Tarnish? What You Need to Know

Gold jewellery is often chosen with one question quietly sitting behind the decision: how long will the colour actually last?

If you have ever owned a gold-plated piece that changed colour sooner than expected, it is understandable to wonder whether all gold-plated jewellery eventually does the same.

The answer is more nuanced. Gold-plated jewellery can change over time, but how quickly that happens depends enormously on how the piece is made, the base metal underneath it and the method used to apply the gold.

Does gold-plated jewellery tarnish?

Gold itself is highly resistant to tarnishing. With gold-plated jewellery, however, there is another material underneath the gold layer.

As a plated finish wears over time, the metal beneath it can become more exposed. Moisture, chemicals, friction and the quality of the original plating can all affect how quickly this happens.

This is why two pieces described simply as “gold-plated” can behave very differently.

What makes some gold plating last longer?

There is more to durable gold jewellery than the words “gold-plated”.

The base material matters. The plating process matters. The way the piece is worn and cared for matters too.

At Parisa, most of our gold pieces use 316L stainless steel as their base and are finished with 18ct gold PVD plating.

Stainless steel gives the jewellery a durable foundation, while PVD is a different application process from conventional thin electroplating and is chosen for its resistance to everyday wear and fading.

What is PVD gold plating?

PVD stands for Physical Vapour Deposition.

Rather than simply depositing a conventional layer of colour onto the surface, the PVD process creates a highly adherent finish on the metal.

This makes PVD-plated stainless steel particularly useful for jewellery intended to be worn regularly.

It does not mean jewellery becomes indestructible, but the construction of the piece can make an important difference to how well its finish withstands wear.

Is tarnish-proof jewellery really tarnish-proof?

“Tarnish-proof” is commonly used to describe jewellery made to resist the discolouration associated with more reactive metals and less durable finishes.

It should not be understood to mean that no piece of jewellery could ever show signs of wear under any circumstances.

Can you get PVD gold jewellery wet?

PVD-plated stainless steel is considerably more resistant to water than many traditional plated finishes, which is one reason it has become popular for jewellery designed to be worn frequently.

There is, however, an important distinction when a piece also contains a natural material.

Pearls, gemstones and mother of pearl can have their own care requirements, regardless of how durable the metal surrounding them may be.

What causes gold-plated jewellery to fade faster?

Even durable jewellery benefits from sensible care.

Repeated exposure to harsh chemicals, chlorine, abrasive products and heavy friction can all place unnecessary stress on a jewellery finish.

Perfume and skincare are best allowed to settle before putting jewellery on, particularly when a piece contains pearls or natural stones.

How should you care for gold PVD jewellery?

Caring for your jewellery does not need to become a ritual.

• Wipe pieces gently with a soft cloth when needed.
• Avoid abrasive jewellery cleaners.
• Keep jewellery away from harsh household chemicals.
• Consider the care requirements of pearls, gemstones and natural shell.
• Store pieces separately where possible to reduce unnecessary scratching.

Choosing jewellery made to keep its colour

If colour longevity matters to you, look beyond the word “gold-plated”.

Ask what sits underneath the gold and how the finish has been applied. Stainless steel combined with PVD gold plating offers a very different construction from jewellery made with a more reactive base metal and an extremely thin conventional coating.
